During a conference on misconceptions in science and mathematics at Cornell University in 1994 Dr. Comins asked more than fifty researchers to define the word “misconception”. No two people gave identical definitions and each interpreted that word differently. He define a misconception as any deeply held belief that is inconsistent with currently accepted sceintific concepts. Deeply held beliefs are not superficial ones, but those we have incorporated into our understanding of the world and use in a variety of different contexts.
